On January 11, 2024, Malaysia and Singapore officially signed a memorandum of cooperation on the Johor Singapore Special Economic Zone in Johor Bahru, injecting new vitality into the economic development cooperation between the two countries.

In the presence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Malaysian Minister of Economy Raffaz and Singaporean Minister of Trade and Industry Yan Jinyong signed a memorandum of cooperation. To ensure the smooth implementation of the special economic zone plan, the two countries will jointly establish a joint committee.

It is reported that this memorandum of cooperation mainly involves providing investment facilitation measures for Singaporean enterprises within the Special Economic Zone, aiming to improve the efficiency of customs clearance for personnel and goods on both sides, strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, and cultivate talents in the Special Economic Zone.

Malaysia and Singapore officially proposed the idea of establishing a Johor Singapore Special Economic Zone within the state of Johor in July 2023, and subsequently established a joint working group to advance this plan. The signing of this memorandum is seen as a significant step towards promoting the construction of special economic zones.
