The Federal Government of Ethiopia is constructing a supply dam in Mekane Selam. The town is located in the central region of the East African country, in the Debub Wollo district of the Amhara region. The project aims to improve access to clean drinking water in the region and surrounding areas.

The construction of the Mekane Selam supply dam is to be built by the Ethiopian Federal Government in cooperation with the International Biodiversity Association, the International Agricultural Research Advisory Group and the International Tropical Agriculture Center. The water project will be executed by the Ethiopian government at a cost of approximately US $ 32 million. According to the partnership, the technical team led by experts from Merkel University is already working on a detailed comprehensive "landscape master plan" for the project.

The significance of Mekane Selam Dam

The main plan of the Mekane Selam Water Supply Dam is to improve the drinking water supply to the people of Mekane Selam and its surrounding areas. Mekane Selam is the second most densely populated area in Ethiopia, with a population of approximately 100,000. There are several underground wells in the area, but their production is still insufficient to support the development of the city. This situation is expected to deteriorate even further due to the estimated annual population growth of approximately 7% and the strong development potential of industry, universities and other amenities.

In addition to providing clean water, the dam is expected to provide water for plantation irrigation around Mekane Selam. This strategy will subsequently reduce the risk of drought for small-scale farmers in downstream areas.

In addition, the dam is planned to be used as a tourism and entertainment center for local residents, which will also become a source of income. Editor / Huang Lijun
