Construction giant Orascom Construction, which is listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq, together with its Canadian partner Bombardier, laid the $ 4.5 billion Cairo monorail project. The construction of the first monorail in the new administrative capital of Egypt, Cairo, with a total length of 54 kilometers.
Orascom said in a statement on its official LinkedIn page that in the first week of May, the groundbreaking ceremony for the first monorail was held in the new administrative capital, which will extend 54 kilometers from eastern Cairo to the capital.
Orascom added: "This huge project will bring a revolution to Egypt ’s transportation sector, which will combine the inherent environmental protection characteristics of monorail with smart modern design. This will help reduce pollution rates and traffic congestion. And unite the city. "
Design and construction of two monorail lines
In August 2019, Orascom, in cooperation with Arab contractors and Bombardier Transportation, signed an agreement with the Cairo National Tunnel Authority to design and build two monorail lines in Egypt.
The first monorail will extend 54 kilometers from East Cairo to the new administrative capital.
The second line is 42 kilometers long and will connect Giza City on October 6. This is the first public transportation line connecting Greater Cairo with the new capital and the city of October 6, which will greatly increase the mobility of Egyptian citizens. When the maximum passenger capacity is reached, the two lines will be able to transport approximately 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The running speed is as high as 80 km / h, the travel time of the new capital is about 60 minutes (54 km route), and about 6 minutes on October 6 (42 km route).
After the construction is completed, the consortium will operate and maintain these two production lines for 30 years. Bombardier Transportation said in a statement at the time that its share of large projects was $ 2.9 billion, while Orascom Construction's share of the total contract was nearly $ 900 million.
According to data from Bombardier Transportation, the two railway lines, after operating at full capacity, will transport nearly 45,000 passengers in each direction every hour.
In 2019, Beirut-based construction and engineering consulting firm Khatib & Alami was appointed as the construction, financing and operations consultant for Egypt ’s $ 4.5 billion Cairo monorail. Earlier in 2020, the National Tunneling Authority, represented by an Arab contractor, awarded the Dutch company Fugro, which is the second phase of the geophysical and geotechnical survey contract for the Cairo monorail superlarge project.
