The Queensland Government of Australia announced that it will start the 481 million dollar ($33107 million) Bruce Highway upgrade project, which is located between Edmonton and Gordonville. It is expected to create 466 jobs. The project aims to increase the capacity of the two-lane road between Edmonton and Gordonville.
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said: "The southern suburbs of Cairns are developing rapidly, which is why the Australian government has committed more than 840 million Australian dollars to upgrade from Gordonville to Cairns Cairns South Passage in CBD."
The project not only rebuilt highways, but also provided new service roads, and partially closed several intersections and direct entrances to existing highways. This will improve traffic flow, increase the speed limit to 100 kilometers per hour, and create a safer and more efficient Bruce Highway for the future.
The project involves the removal of level crossings, the construction of new overpasses and new routes for highways south of Maitland Road.
Queensland’s Minister of Transportation and Major Roads Mark Bailey said: "This is part of a $1.45 billion Far North Road and Transportation plan that includes the $104 million Cairns South Passage Phase 4-Kate Street to Aumuller Street project And the $164 million Smithfield detour project."
"Because Queensland has responded strongly to the downturn economy under the impact of the new coronavirus, the Queensland Government's $23 billion in road and transportation projects is essential to stimulate economic recovery."
