The Kenyan National Government, through the National Railway Cooperation Corporation (Kenya Railway Corporation), will begin to rebuild the old rice-gauge railway from Nakuru to Kisumu in August.

According to the managing director of Kenya Railway Company Philip Meenga, the project will be implemented by Kenyan railway engineers, national youth service soldiers and women, and local youth within 8 to 12 months. Initially, Kenya planned to hire foreign workers from China based on a bilateral cooperation agreement with China, but according to the general manager of Kenya Railways, the new plan will significantly reduce project costs.

After the Kenyan government abandoned its plan to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu and then to the Uganda border, the Kenyan government refurbished the railway more than 100 years ago. Previously, the East African country failed to obtain billions of shillings in loans from China, and China provided funding for the first and second phases of the project. The first phase of the project from Mombasa to Nairobi began operations about 3 years ago, and the second phase of the project from Nairobi to Naivasha was completed in August last year.

Funding for the 216-kilometer Nakuru-Kisum railway line will come from domestic resources. It will connect to the recently refurbished Port of Kissum to transport passengers and goods (such as fertilizer, cement, rice) through Lake Victoria. , Edible oil and spare parts, etc.) to neighboring Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The railway will become an important transport corridor for general goods entering and leaving East Africa. Editor/Huang Lijun
