On October 9, the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment announced that the government had passed a resolution to update Poland’s nuclear power plan. The plan goal is to build 6 nuclear reactors to achieve 6-9 gigawatts of power generation capacity.
According to the plan, the first nuclear power plant will select the technology in 2021, complete the site selection and approval procedures in 2022, and sign contracts with technology providers and main contractors, start construction in 2026, and put it into use in 2033. Construction of the second power plant will begin in 2032. By the beginning of 2040, six nuclear reactors will be built to provide electricity for Polish industry and society. The plan excludes boiling water reactors (BWR) and small modular reactors (SMR). The AP1000 from Westinghouse, the APR1400 from KHNP from South Korea, the EPR from Framatome from France, the VVER series from Russia, and Chinese designs such as Hualong No. 1 meet the set standards.
The Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Michal Kurtyka, said that the updated plan is a milestone on the road to stable, zero-emission energy in Poland, and Poland will ensure energy security with the help of nuclear energy.
At present, there are about 100 Polish companies participating in nuclear power projects around the world, which has laid a good foundation for the construction of Poland's own nuclear power system. "Kurtyka said, "Poland already has a scientific research reactor, but for the construction of the first nuclear power plant, Poland still needs to carry out international cooperation with parties who can provide technology."
