On the afternoon of November 12, 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the Binjiang area of Wushan District, Nantong City. In a cordial exchange with the citizens, the general secretary mentioned the Shanghai-Sutong Yangtze River Highway and Railway Bridge in this way: "This morning, I attended the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Pudong Development and Opening-up in Shanghai and came to Nantong in the afternoon. Back then, you and Shanghai Facing each other across the river, Nantong is not easy to'pass'. Now the bridge across the river is built, one bridge spans north and south, and the sky becomes a thoroughfare. From then on,'Nantong is easy to pass.'" The vivid words won everyone's warm applause.

The Shanghai-Sutong Yangtze River Highway and Railway Bridge opened to traffic on July 1, 2020. It is located in the Chengtong section of the Yangtze River, starting from Tongzhou District of Nantong City in the north and Zhangjiagang City in the south. It is 11072 meters in length and is a four-lane railway and six-lane highway. The bridge, which also serves as the "three-in-one" function of national railway, intercity railway and expressway, is the key and controlling project of the Shanghai-Sutong Railway.

As an important part of the coastal high-speed railway in the national eight-vertical and eight-horizontal railway network, the bridge is a common river-crossing passage for the Shanghai-Sutong Railway, the Tongsu-Jiamen Intercity Railway, and the Xitong Expressway.
