On December 1, 2020, an excavator slowly scooped out the first bucket of mud on an engineering ship at the Jaya Container Terminal in Colombo Port, Sri Lanka, marking the official start of the Jaya Terminal expansion project undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Co., Ltd. The construction period is 20 months.
Sri Lanka’s Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abegunawadna, said at the groundbreaking ceremony that he was very fortunate to cooperate with China Harbour and looked forward to the expansion of Jaya Terminal to make the port of Colombo more efficient, thereby making Sri Lanka a maritime hub in Asia. Zeng Nanhai, deputy general manager of China Harbor Sri Lanka Regional Company, said that the main content of the Jaya Wharf expansion project is the design and construction of a 120-meter-long wharf. This cooperation reflects the persistent responsibility of overseas Chinese companies during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the traditional friendship between China and Sri Lanka. After the completion of the project, it will greatly improve the handling efficiency of Colombo Port and promote the development of international trade in Sri Lanka.
Currently, the Port of Colombo has three container terminals, and Jaya Terminal is the second largest container terminal in the Port of Colombo.Editor/Luo Wentao
