On December 24, 2020, the Fifth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge (now known as Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Yangtze River Bridge) and the Shangba Jiajiang Bridge on the western section of Puyi Highway, which were constructed by China Railway Baoqiao, were officially opened to traffic. Nanjing urban traffic ushered in a historic moment of highlight! The Fifth Yangtze River Bridge is the world's first light-duty steel-concrete composite structure cable-stayed bridge. It serves as an important link between the main city of Nanjing Jiangnan and the new main city of Jiangbei. It can cross the river in 10 minutes and is free for all-day traffic.

The Fifth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge

Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Yangtze River Bridge, also known as "Nanjing Yangtze River Fifth Bridge", is a river-crossing passage connecting Pukou District and Jianye District in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It is located above the Yangtze River and below the Jiajiang Waterway. An important part of the first ring of the expressway around the city in the expressway system.

The Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Yangtze River Bridge connects with Wuli Bridge on Jiangbei Avenue in the north, crosses the main channel of the Yangtze River to Jiangxinzhou, and crosses Jiajiang with the Jiajiang Tunnel in Jiangxinzhou, and reaches Jiangshan Street in the south. The length of the line is 10.355 kilometers and the total length of the bridge is 4.4 kilometers. The bridge is 1796 meters long and the north-south main span is 1200 meters long; the bridge deck is a two-way six-lane urban arterial road with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a total investment of 6.2 billion yuan.

The entire Nanjing Yangtze River Fifth Bridge adopts the two-way six-lane first-class highway standard construction. The design speed of the roadbed and bridge section is 100 km/h, and the width is 30.5 meters (the bridge does not include the cable distribution area); the design speed of the tunnel section is 80 km/h, and the net width is 2 × 12.25 meters. At the same time, the Fifth Yangtze River Bridge is not only a very important passage across the river in Nanjing, it is also of great significance in the architectural design community-this is the world's first light-weight steel-concrete cable-stayed bridge.

The construction of the Fifth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge will improve the regional backbone road network, further promote the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and improve the layout of national trunk highways and river crossing channels in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. At the same time, it is of great significance for alleviating the traffic pressure across the river, speeding up the construction of Nanjing Jiangbei New District, accelerating the promotion of the strategy of "supporting the river and crossing the river", enhancing the comprehensive strength of Nanjing city and expanding the urban space.

River Crossing Bridge for the West Section of Puyi Highway

The western section of Puyi Highway is located in Jiangbei New District. The route starts at Pusi Interchange where National Highway 104 and Jiangbei Avenue cross, and is laid along the planning corridor to the northeast. After crossing the Shangba Jiajiang River, it intersects with the planning Heyan Road crossing and continues to the northeast. It ends at Nanjing Second Bridge Expressway, with a total length of 11.5km. The western section of Puyi Highway is a component of National Road 104 in the road network planning, and it is also a component of Jiangsu Provincial Highway 001 Nanjing First Ring Road. It is connected to Jiangbei Avenue, Nanjing Second Bridge Expressway, Ring Road and the five under construction. The bridge crossing the river constitutes Nanjing First Ring Road.

Shangba Jiajiang Bridge is a cable-stayed cable-stayed bridge with a double-tower cable surface steel box girder of 500 meters and a total length of 2100 meters. There are pedestrian and non-motor vehicle lanes on both sides. The total width of the bridge reaches 54.4 meters. The steel tower adopts a central single column. With a total weight of more than 12,000 tons, the two steel towers are the widest double cable-stayed bridge on the Yangtze River. The opening of the bridge shortened the journey from the core area of the new area to Baguazhou from about 32 kilometers to about 22 kilometers, saving about 30 minutes of travel time.

After the Shangba Jiajiang Bridge opens to traffic, it will formally form the Nanjing Ring Road Ring Road with Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Bridge (Nanjing Yangtze River Fifth Bridge), Nanjing Baguazhou Yangtze River Bridge (Nanjing Yangtze River Second Bridge), Ring Road, and Jiangbei Avenue, which is greatly convenient Citizen travel is of great significance to improving the overall structure of the express road network and realizing the development of Nanjing's riverside.
