One of Kenya's most ambitious projects, the construction of the Mombasa Gates Bridge will begin in June 2021. The feasibility study carried out by the Kenya National Highway Agency (KeNHA) has been completed. The 1.4-kilometer bridge will connect Mombasa to the southern coast and replace the ferry operations and the recently opened Liwatoni floating footbridge.
Bridge overview
The cable-stayed bridge has four lanes, starting from Lumumba Road, across the Likony Strait of the Mwenza River, and connecting to the A14 highway in Mtonwe.
On the Mombasa side, the bridge structure will start from Lumumba Road near King'orani Prison and gradually ascend through Mombasa Railway Station and then over Moi Avenue to the west of Canon Tower.

The construction of the bridge is expected to take 36 months to complete. The construction cost of this bridge is about 749 million US dollars. Ukur Yattani, Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of Finance, and Ryoichi Horie, the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, recently signed a loan agreement for the project.
