At this stage, the Moroccan government vigorously develops renewable energy power supply, aiming to meet electricity demand. Morocco plans to achieve 50% of its electricity demand from renewable energy sources by 2030 and 100% of its electricity demand by 2050.
According to 2019 data, renewable energy accounts for approximately 35% of the country's electricity demand. As of the end of 2019, Morocco's solar power generation capacity was 736 megawatts. The entire renewable energy production capacity is 3,264 MW.
Solar energy will become the main force of renewable energy in Morocco
Looking to the future, as solar energy becomes more cost-competitive, solar energy will assume greater responsibility in the growth of renewable energy.
Another major source of new energy capacity and production will be wind energy. Morocco has a lot of natural wind resources and electricity potential. A new report from the UAE-based Middle East Solar Energy Industry Association (MESIA) believes that “Morocco is one of the most advanced countries that have successfully developed and implemented renewable energy strategies.”
Since Morocco supported and signed the Paris Agreement, Morocco’s efforts to formulate green policies have increased rapidly. The country is committed to implementing a renewable energy strategy. Although COVID19 has brought some uncertainty, it is expected to achieve the 2020 goal and its ultimate goal of producing 52% of electricity from renewable energy.
In response to climate change, Morocco is at the forefront of Africa and even the world. In addition, like other countries, the rapid growth of additional power from renewable energy sources has also caused problems with grid integration, and Morocco is increasingly seeking smart digital solutions. In general, Morocco is taking more reasonable steps to achieve the goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050. Editor/Sang Xiaomei
