The UAE is launching a new energy model to plan the country's energy transition in the next 50 years.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency and Khalifa University launched the National Integrated Energy Model on March 2 to promote more sustainable development in this field.
The new model will support the UAE’s existing national energy strategy, which hopes to incorporate 50% of clean energy into the country’s power structure by 2050. The strategy also aims to increase the efficiency of personal and institutional consumption by 40% during this period.
Accelerate the energy transition
Sherif Al Olama, Deputy Minister of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, said: "Clean energy is an important part of the future energy structure, and the UAE will take this into consideration when formulating national strategies and laws." He added that clean energy, including hydrogen, is becoming an alternative to the traditional energy sector.
As the third largest producer of OPEC, the UAE is taking various steps to diversify its energy structure, including the establishment of a hydrogen alliance in early 2021 to increase investment in clean fuels.
Mubadala’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and the holding company ADQ are all part of an ecosystem that aims to produce and export green and gray hydrogen.
