The construction of a new bridge across the River Clyde in Scotland is now underway. The project is valued at approximately 90.85 million euros (79.5 million pounds) and was awarded to the civil engineering company Graham by the Renfrewshire Council. The civil engineering company is working with Amey and Ramboll, the latter will be responsible for the design part of the project.
Several other companies are also bidding for the construction of the new bridge in the bidding process, including Balfour Beatty and a joint venture team composed of American Bridge and Roadbridge.
The bridge will adopt a novel double-leaf design and will connect Yoker and Renfrew carrying vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. This project is worth noting because the 186m link will be the first open bridge built in Scotland and will also be able to be raised to allow ships to pass. It is estimated that the construction of the new bridge will take 36 months to complete, and the construction is about to begin. The necessary planning approvals have been made for the work to proceed.
With the construction of the bridge, local traffic will no longer need to use ferry services. The new link will also provide local transport links to the business district near Glasgow Airport. However, the vast majority of traffic will continue to use the M8 highway to enter the airport itself. Editor/Sang Xiaomei
