Zambia has launched an ambitious plan to promote power generation in this southern African country. The comprehensive resource plan will be implemented within 30 years with the support of the British government.

According to Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa, the plan will become a method of the national power system, which includes an assessment of available energy resources and demand opportunities. "This is essential to meet the country's electricity demand while maintaining the country's development goals in terms of social equity and environmental sustainability. The implementation of the plan is expected to improve long-term reliability, affordability, efficiency and power supply, among other things. Security, while keeping pace with economic growth and development."

He further added that the implementation of the plan will minimize the short- and long-term economic costs of providing electricity services, as well as determine the country's medium and long-term investment needs, and provide a favorable environment for business plans.

The British High Commissioner in Zambia, Nicholas Woolley (Nicholas Woolley) said that the plan will be very helpful in the use of renewable energy technologies and the operation of smart grids, which will give energy users more control over their energy use. He added: “Innovation in the private sector will bring new options to the market, which will greatly reduce the cost of developing and operating power systems.”

Power generation in Zambia

According to data from GET.invest, Zambia is rich in renewable energy resources. Small and large hydropower is the main contribution of the country's electricity supply, and given its high-tech potential, it will be further developed in the coming decades. However, high solar radiation values are expected to provide strong potential for the development of solar photovoltaic-based power generation. With the decline in technology costs, IFC's Scaling Solar program and SIDA's Beyond Grid Fund have recently demonstrated the development potential of solar photovoltaics.Editor/Huang Lijun
