On October 22, 2019, the head of the Brazilian regional oil company of the Norwegian National Oil Company said that the company is looking for a location on the Brazilian coast to install a new natural gas infrastructure, because the company's offshore-intensive natural gas fields will be put into operation in the next few years. In Brazil, natural gas is considered to be a promising opportunity and a headache. The Latin American oil power is rapidly developing a prolific oil zone in the sub-salt area on the southeast coast of the country.
Many of the assets in the region have large amounts of natural gas, but the consumption of Brazilians is very low, and there are few pipes and terminals in the country to promote exports. As a result, companies have largely chosen to “re-inject” natural gas in the process of increasing crude oil production. But this method has a limited duration. Some of the sub-salt fields being mined cannot be reinjected because of too much gas. Two large-scale government auctions in areas with abundant natural gas reserves in early November 2019 may exacerbate this problem.
In an interview, Norwegian National Oil Company executive vice president Margareth Øvrum estimated that the company's condensate oil and gas field Pao de Acucar will be launched in the mid-2020s, which may make it "the first (Brazil) need for onshore natural gas export solutions) gas field."
The company also had a similar conversation in the Carcara field. She said that the company is expected to start "first phase" production in 2023 or the first half of 2024. It added that the Norwegian National Oil Company has not yet decided when to start the second phase of production, but it may also involve the construction of natural gas infrastructure.
