On October 23, 2019, the Bulgarian company GP Group, Global Construction and Via Plan have started the construction of the Zheleznitsa tunnel on the Struma highway, with a construction cost of 154 million leva ($105.4 million / €94.8 million).

The government agency said in a statement that Zheleznitsa is about 2 kilometers long and will become the longest highway tunnel in Bulgaria. According to the registration agency's data, in this cooperation, GP Group and Global Construction control 49% of the shares, respectively, and Via Plan has 2% of the shares. The agency also signed a contract to build these sections at both ends of the tunnel. The larger transaction was worth 30 million leva, involving the construction of a 720-meter highway section. The contract was obtained in cooperation with three companies of the local Glavbolgarstroy holding company.

The local PST Group will build an additional 1.4 km on the other side of the tunnel under a contract of 18.4 million Lev. All three contracts benefit from the EU's funding under the operating plan transportation and transportation infrastructure.
