Recently, the Iraqi Ministry of Petroleum announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the French Ministry of Electricity.
The French-based energy giant Total will invest and develop a photovoltaic power generation project with an installed capacity of 1GW in Iraq. The photovoltaic power generation project is one of the four energy projects that the Iraqi government hopes Total will help develop. The remaining three are related to oil and gas infrastructure. Iraq is seeking to implement a new energy industry and power development plan centered on solar power generation. In February 2021, Bloomberg reported that the Iraqi Oil Minister stated that the country’s solar power generation goal is to reach 10GW by 2030. However, the International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that the country has the potential to achieve 21GW of installed solar power capacity by 2030.
