The Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) Group is pushing its power business into the fast lane. It is estimated that the power generation will increase by at least 1 GW every year, in order to achieve the goal of 16GW by 2030. PTT President and CEO Auttapol Rerkpiboon said that its power generation unit Global Power Synergy Plc (GPSC) and other subsidiaries are expected to jointly implement expansion plans to increase the current capacity of 5.05GW. This move comes at a time when clean energy has become a global trend.

PTT plans to allocate 6% of its total capital expenditure worth 851 billion baht to its power generation business. The money will be allocated to 2025. As of the end of May, renewable energy power generation accounted for only 11% of GPSC's 5.05GW investment portfolio, with solar farms, waste-to-energy plants and hydropower being the main sources of electricity. The remaining 89% of production capacity comes from natural gas, oil and coal.

Mr. Auttapol said that half of the estimated 16GW capacity target will come from renewable resources and the other half will come from fossil fuels. PTT is expanding its renewable energy development through Global Renewable Power Co, a subsidiary jointly owned by PTT and GPSC. He said that after 2030, renewable energy and other non-oil businesses should account for 20% of the group's total revenue. In the field of natural gas power generation, PTT Exploration and Production Plc (PTTEP) is overseeing a natural gas power plant development project in Myanmar. The Ministry of Electricity and Energy of Myanmar allowed PTTEP to continue its development in December last year.

The project uses natural gas from the PTTEP oil field in Martaban Bay (including the Zawtika and M3 blocks) to generate electricity for the Myanmar National Grid. Investments worth US$2 billion (62.3 billion baht) are used for upstream development projects, including a 600-megawatt combined cycle power plant in Kyaiklat, Ayeyarwady Province. In the field of solar energy, GPSC launched a polymer floating structure called "G Float" last month, which is part of a floating solar farm, dedicated to the development of an innovation-led solar business. The floating solar pontoon is expected to strengthen the company's position as a leader in solar development projects.
