Recently, a consortium composed of China Railway Shanghai Design Institute Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway Engineering Design Consulting Group Co., Ltd. won the bid for the pre-feasibility study and engineering feasibility study project of the Jiangsu section of the Suzhou-Shanghai Intercity Railway via Dianshan Lake. After that, the China Railway Shanghai Institute will undertake the research work of the pre-construction stage and the construction stage of the Sudian-Shanghai line. The total length of the line from Suzhou to Shanghai Intercity Railway (including the Shanghai section) via Dianshan Lake is about 40 kilometers, of which the Jiangsu section is about 32 kilometers long, with a total investment of about 10 billion yuan.

It is reported that the line starts from Sangtiandao Station of Suzhou Metro Line 2 in the west and passes through Luzhi and Jinxi to Shanghai. It is planned to connect with the Sujiayong high-speed railway, such as the Sutong-Suhu Intercity Railway, the (Shanghai) Suxichang Intercity Railway, and connect the Shanghai-Sujia Intercity Railway (Demonstration Zone Line) to the Qingpu area in the east. The Suzhou-Shanghai Intercity Railway via Dianshan Lake is a metropolitan intercity railway that mainly serves intercity passenger flow and takes into account the passenger flow of the cities along the line. It will help ease the pressure on the Shanghai-Nanjing intercity and promote the formation of groups of cities and towns along the line to Shanghai. The project has been included in the "Intercity Railway Construction Plan for the Riverside Urban Agglomeration in Jiangsu Province (2019-2025)" approved by the National Development and Reform Commission at the end of 2018.
