The opening of the Golden Port Expressway can fill the gap in Cambodia’s infrastructure needs. On June 21, 2021, the Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Zhanto, led a team to inspect the Phnom Penh-Westport Expressway ("Golden Port Expressway") project under construction. . He said that the Cambodian side will fully cooperate with the project and strive to achieve the opening to traffic in September 2022.
Sun Zhantuo successively inspected the construction sites of modified asphalt paving, the project center laboratory and the terminal roundabout, and listened to the report of the project leader on the progress. Sun Zhantuo highly praised China Road and Bridge’s first overseas modified asphalt plant built by the project. He believes that the asphalt technology is suitable for Cambodia’s hot and rainy weather, can improve pavement performance, extend service life, and will effectively reduce future operation and maintenance costs and promote Cambodia Technological innovation and progress in the infrastructure industry.
Sun Zhantuo said: "This project is very beneficial to Cambodian workers and provides them with the technology to build highways. I hope that after the project is completed, they can use this knowledge to help Cambodia build more highways."
According to Hu Zhaoguang, general manager of the Jingang Expressway project, since the start of the project, it has adhered to both epidemic prevention and production, and has accumulated over 60% of the overall project output value.

Golden Port Expressway is Cambodia's first expressway, invested by China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. and operated by BOT (build-operate-transfer). Construction of the project started in March 2019. The original plan was to open to traffic in March 2023, with an operating period of 50 years. With a total investment of US$2.019 billion, the project connects the capital Phnom Penh with Sihanoukville, a major port province, with a total length of 187.05 kilometers. After completion, the Golden Port Expressway will facilitate the transportation of goods between the two economic zones and help stimulate economic growth at the provincial and national levels.
