On July 8, 2021, the west half of the reconstruction and reinforcement project of Xiamen Bridge undertaken by Xiamen Company was opened to traffic and the east-west traffic conversion was completed. The direction of departure from the island was increased from the original two lanes to three lanes, which will effectively alleviate the pressure of vehicles leaving the island.

The Xiamen Bridge is the first cross-strait highway bridge in China. Construction started by the China Communications First Public Bureau Group in October 1988 and was officially opened to traffic in December 1991. In order to improve the capacity and structural condition of the bridge and meet the increasing traffic demand, the reconstruction and reinforcement project of the Xiamen Bridge was officially launched in January 2021, and the closed construction of the west half of the bridge began.

The Xiamen Bridge Reconstruction and Reinforcement Project has a route length of about 3.8 kilometers. The construction content includes the "four to six" reconstruction and reinforcement of the main bridge, widening of the approach bridge, bridge deck reconstruction, support replacement, reconstruction of the southern section of the sea embankment road, and synchronization of existing bridge diseases Repair to restore the durability of the structure and increase the bearing capacity of the bridge. This project is currently the largest cross-sea bridge reconstruction and reinforcement project in China.

The strengthening of the Xiamen Bridge has further enhanced the development potential of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone. At present, the Xiamen Bridge has been converted to the east half of the construction, and vehicles from the island have been transferred to the west half of the three-lane road. As one of the important passages in and out of the island in Xiamen, after the completion of the reconstruction and reinforcement of the Xiamen Bridge, it is of great significance to improve the traffic capacity and structural condition of the bridge, enhance the comprehensive traffic carrying capacity of Xiamen, and accelerate the development of Xiamen across the island.
