Exxon Mobil signed a memorandum of understanding to participate in the recently announced acorn carbon capture and storage project (CCS) in Scotland. The project plans to capture and store approximately 5-6 million tons of carbon dioxide annually from the natural gas terminal at the St Fergus complex in Peterhead, Scotland, by 2030, including ExxonMobil’s joint venture natural gas terminal.

The Acorn project is likely to provide more than half of the 10 million tons of carbon dioxide storage set by the British government each year. If the scale is expanded, it is possible to store more than 20 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year by the mid-2030s.

"ExxonMobil has more than 30 years of experience in CCS technology and is advancing multiple new CCS opportunity programs around the world," said Joe Blommaert, President of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions. "We are very pleased to support the Acorn project to deploy CCS. This is one of the most important technologies needed to achieve social climate goals.” Exxon Mobil also stated that it has joined NECCUS, an alliance of industry, government and academic experts dedicated to reducing carbon emissions from Scottish industrial facilities. .

ExxonMobil’s membership will help the alliance leverage the company’s extensive global experience in carbon capture and storage to explore the potential of technology-driven solutions to reduce emissions. NECCUS members include the Scottish government, four leading Scottish universities and multiple industry partners.

"Our membership in NECCUS and our participation with Acorn underscores our commitment to solving the dual challenges of meeting the world's energy needs while reducing emissions from our operations," Blommaert said, "as a world that develops and uses carbon capture and storage Leading the way, we will work with the alliance to determine how this technology can play a key role in reducing Scotland’s emissions." "NECCUS welcomes ExxonMobil to join our alliance," said Mike Smith, CEO of NECCUS. Carbon industry emissions will be a challenging but indispensable part of achieving the national net zero emissions target by 2045. We believe that Scotland is in a good position to provide technologies such as carbon capture and storage and hydrogen, which are to achieve net zero industry Necessary for clusters. Cooperation among NECCUS’s internal organizations is critical to achieving this goal, and the experience that Exxon Mobil brings will strengthen this cooperation."

In March, Exxon Mobil established a low-carbon solutions business to commercialize low-emission technologies. It initially focused on CCS, the process of capturing carbon dioxide from industrial activities, otherwise the carbon dioxide would be released into the atmosphere and injected into deep underground geological structures for safe, reliable and permanent storage. ExxonMobil is an industry leader in CCS technology and has more than 30 years of carbon capture experience. The company owns approximately one-fifth of the world’s carbon dioxide capture capacity and captures approximately 40% of all man-made carbon dioxide captured in the world.

The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2040, CCS can reduce global emissions by up to 15%. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that without CCS, the cost of global decarbonization efforts may double.Editor/Baohongying
